Landcare ACT welcomes the announcement today of a $2.7 million investment in ACT community landcare through the Australian Government Urban Rivers and Catchments program.  

Led by Landcare ACT, in partnership with the three ACT Catchment Groups, this program will support ACT wide community action to restore habitat and improve water quality in priority areas of the Ginninderra, Molonglo and Southern ACT Catchments.  

As we celebrate Landcare Week and the critical role played by environmental volunteers, we are pleased to have the financial support of the Australian Government to support our on-ground activities in improving waterways of urban Canberra. Nationally, the Landcare movement has been working to restore, enhance and protect the natural environment for over 30 years. 

In the ACT, there are almost 100 Landcare groups and many thousands of individuals caring for local areas caring for our local environments.  This funding will enable volunteers and the organisations that support them to further improve the health and resilience of urban waterways across the ACT and will undoubtedly lead to discussion at the ACT Environmental Volunteers conference this Friday and Saturday.

Specifically,  this funding will allow us collectively to remove threatening weed species and gross pollutants, restore riparian vegetation, and enhance connectivity.  We will also work to protect and maintain a number of ecological refuges, which plants and animals use during times of environmental stress, which are becoming increasingly critical in a changing climate.
